Florence Adelina Hess (1891-1974) was born in Leeds, living in London and her home town during he life. She studied at Leeds School of Art and from 1905 with the Yorkshire painter Mark Senior, whose friend and assistant she became, accompanying him on his visits to Bruges and Holland. Florence Hess painted along the coast of Yorkshire and Norfolk, her earlier work showing Senior’s influence. She exhibited widely, notable at the Royal Academy of Arts, London, NEAC and WIAC. Florence Hess was a member of both Staithes Group and Fylingdales Group.
