The New Room, executed in 1972, was created to illustrate the poetry of Liz Lochhead for a project with Malcolm Hossick, a BBC producer. Though the project itself was never to reach the screen, the painting itself has become a significant example of Gray's artistic ability and could not be from any other period than the early 1970s. It has been been a key work in many exhibitions of Gray's art over the decades. All nine paintings in the Lochhead series were collected together for the first time in 2008 at the Sorcha Dallas Gallery in Glasgow.
