New acquisitions and more

It’s been a busy week, up and down the country, but as I sit here, typing away in the gallery, looking out through the large Georgian front windows towards Cockermouth Castle, there’s a touch of Spring glimmering through; I’m ready for Spring.
Our travels over the last few weeks have resulted in new acquisitions for the gallery, most of which may be seen in our Latest Work section.
We were thrilled to acquire this large oil painting The rower at twilight by the late and great Josef Herman (RA). Somewhat brighter than many of his oils, and at 76 x 102 cm, an unusually large painting to come onto the market. It has a real power and strength about it that drew us in instantly, sat there on the wall in its private London collection.
Also acquired are two paintings by the late Mary Fedden (RA). The first, an oil titled Quinces and Vegetables, is a wonderfully subtle still life painting, lending more than a nod to Juan Sanchez Cotans, and acquired again from a splendid private London collection. The second, a beautiful small watercolour titled White Rose, was purchased from the New Grafton Gallery in 1985 and has remained in that sole family ownership ever since; it’s now ready for its second custodian.
We also totally fell for, unusually for us, a French painting, The Reflection by Louis Rollet. Dating to the mid 1920s, it just shouts that Parisian life-study genre from the era. Louis Rollet had a very successful career, exhibiting widely; famed for his paintings of his extensive travels across Africa and Asia, this harks from his period as an artist in Paris prior to those journeys.
We also have many new works within our more affordable Mid Century Modern Alternatives selection, which is always worth keeping an eye on; we always have one or two works heading our way or in mid-negotiation, soon to appear online and in-gallery.
Finally, more of this in the next few weeks, but we’re excited to announce that we’ll be collaborating with the exceedingly well-renowned artist Jake Attree. Jake has had a hugely successful career, with latter years in conjunction with Messums / David Messum in Mayfair and St James’s, London. As said, more of that to follow, but we’ve long admired Jake’s work, so smiles all round.
All for now,
Steve and Christine
