A plethora of new works

As usual, we’ve been busy around the UK seeking out new work for Castlegate. Our latest works include some finds from a visit yesterday to the estate collection of Michael and June Bennett. We brought back a fabulous very early portrait from 1951 by June (then June Steer, pre-marriage) which we’re just a little captivated by, as well as a wonderful larger painting, Nude Sleeping, from 1987

Michael Bennett

We’re planning an exhibition in 2025 of fabulous and fascinating early-decades works by Michael Bennett (the period 1950-1975), which was the principal reason for the visit with their son Justin. But never to turn up an opportunity, we brought back three latter-era paintings by Michael, of a form perhaps more familiar to his collectors; there’s so much complexity to what Mike created, layer upon layer of paint, reworking upon reworking, often works produced over the course of one or two years. He really was a fabulous artist and a truly lovely gent.

Joash Woodrow

Also new to the gallery is a powerful painting by the late Joash Woodrow. From circa 1970, Portrait of a woman in Blue, Black and Pink is a commanding 106 x 72 cm plus frame and typifies the work of Joash. Earlier this year we sold a painting by Joash that ranks as one of our favourite ever works we’ve owned/dealt in and when we get the chance to acquire something of such quality, we try not to hesitate.

George Rowlett

Continuing the impasto paint theme, we’ve also acquired this wonderful 1960s painting by the very talented George Rowlett. Fountain 1968 was produced as one of his Royal Academy of Arts graduation show works and has remained in a sole collection since; its size belies its weight, there’s an awful lot of paint on that canvas!

Mid Century affordable works

As always, we’ve also been active tracking down affordable works in our Mid Century Modern Alternatives selection; art we find on our travels that we can’t walk away from, and which we can offer at affordable levels. We’ve added several works recently and have a number away being framed, so it’s always worth keeping an eye on our latest acquisitions.

Final, as mentioned last time, don’t forget, you can now see every available work for sale in Castlegate stock with one click of a mouse or keyboard/phone press of a finger, with the All Works section, showing in artist surname alphabetical order.

All for now,

Steve and Christine
